The memory in the history

An excerpt about JuTeng’s artistic creation.

Written by JiShaofeng

Three dimensions abound with JuTeng’s visual expression: one is the historical space, the other is the reality arena and the third is the virtual zones. Among which lingers much memories from the childhood as well as the imprints of his life brought by toys, games, comics and the escape rooms, from which we can also find his vision and expectation for the future. Therefore, it is not hard to notice that conventional factors are getting themselves innovated and converted into the contemporary cultural context and local cultures are also being varied and changed under the influence of globalization. But one batch of indisputable fact, the capitalization of art, the internationalization of images, the symbolization of language, the diversification of media, the multiplicity of means, the cartoonlization of expression, and the complexity of semantics has left with readers deep impression. And underneath it all are the cultural codes and passwords orchestrated by JuTeng, for example what kind of visual experience has Great Universal Geographic Map brought to today’s audiences and how many readers can decode the visual secrets by JuTeng and then appreciate them. Obviously JuTeng knows well the significance of a gallery to the youth artists and make full use of spaces available to create a coordination of self-visual representation and possessed space and then make a great harmony in this program. Galleries and artists have achieved a kind of integration and coordination in the project of TangXun New Power.

Of course, we should not only be in possession of experience in the cyberspace but hobbies toward it when it comes to appreciate his images and moreover participate in the artistic creation. His art belongs to the Internet Plus program and to the future. JuTeng uses his historic memories to have a dialogue with the social reality. This phenomenon can be said as a collision of broken memory with fragmented reality, or a mix-up of real space with illusory zones. In such a fragmented reality, JuTeng isn’t devoured by it, instead he hopes to get rid of the haunt of the memory of history, to free from the shackles of the broken memory and fragmented reality, and to move forward cautiously in the reality, while that optimistic mentality and vigorous creative passion inspire him to chase a better future. The interweaving of past, present and future, the mixing of local, global and the contemporary, the blending of tradition, modernity and East-West countries, the echoing voices of pre-modern, modern and post-modern time, the complex and elaborate expression of ideas and the encroachment of the ‘Three-ips’ culture (namely potato chips, movie clips as well as microcomputer chips), all come with a sense of oppression. This sense pe se is kind of anxious living experience that survival reality conveys to every readers. Amid this scenario, readers will consciously or unconsciously follow the images, and looking for an exit to extricate themselves. Subsequently, he will either to successfully escape from his carefully woven world of visual images or to get lost in it and know nothing what to do. The readers will either merrily to participate in it or happily wander in or leave from the images without asking anything. However, the hard-constructed spiritual space made by JuTeng have encroached on the galleries of the art museum. JuTeng himself can be dubbed as a man with courage, resourcefulness and literary talent, his well-designed cultural codes have exerted amusement and imagination to the readers with eternal effects.
