People have travelled over thousands of mountains without drawing any lessons; they have looked at everything without forming any insights. Today, the world is entering a general process of de-narrativisation, reinforcing the sense that everything is fleeting. In The Burnout Society, the Korean-German philosopher Byung-chul Han  summed up the way in which human beings engage in self-exploitation as follows: "Everyone is in his own labour camp." What is special about such labour camps is that one is at the same time a prisoner and a guard, a victim and an abuser. This phenomenon does not represent the exhausted self, but the exhausted and burned out mind. The drastic change in the pace of life from the Zhejiang to the Wuhan has prompted Cheng Xiaolan to reflect on the contradictory relationships between individuals in the current city. His art practice reflects a kind of micro-individual's hidden observation of the macro-concepts of human beings, and the artist responds to the phenomenon of social exploitation by using a childish style of writing combined with sharp and precise graphic narratives. At the same time, it is also a kind of postmodern self-awareness of inward exploration. -Guo Yi (curator)
