Since 2021, I have created a series of works centered on the Smart (Smart subculture, referring to rural migrant youth in 2010s China known for their flamboyant hairstyles and working-class identity). This group holds an ineffable fascination for me. My earliest impression of them stems from childhood—adults dismissing Smart kids as "those crazy ones," while their neon-bright hairstyles electrified the streets of my rural hometown. As I grew older, the subculture largely vanished. Yet the migrant youth from villages remain; my younger cousin still followed the fate of entering factory work at sixteen. In 2021, China's migrant worker population reached 292.51 million. How do these young souls face these realities?
I love colors ,I love the hairstyles of the Smart. So I began painting—their fleeting romances, their overstuffed luggage during Chinese New Year homecomings. Gradually, the vibrant-haired youths in my works transcended mere "Smart." A parallel dream emerged: the moon becomes a disco ball as the world falls asleep. We glide on rollerblades above the city, turning into tiny lanterns lit by stars in the night. The music blares, but don’t worry—the sleepers won’t wake. With the magic of wheels, all we cherish dances together.
