The imagery on the canvas is vague. It seems to be a fish, seems to be a butterfly. But it seems that they both are not. A fish is not a fish, a bird is not a bird, and objects are not objects, because all things are in a state of semi-nature, which is reliant on perception. I almost believe Lv Yan has a superior understanding of the state of materialization. The riddles state "horses are not horses" and "you are not a fish, how can you perceive the pleasure of fish?". They ask us to listen to the heart of things, casually revealing their sophisticated enlightenment.( Xia Kejun)
