Deng Xianxian: With plain white paper unfolded on the table, I paint the outlines with a fine brush and add color with light pastels. Pigment and water slowly add color to the texture of the paper with a first, second, and third layer. The color is still light, but the outline and shape grow gradually more distinct. The process is like developing film back when people still used film. I enjoy the gesture of brushwork during this process. I enjoy the mild, diluted hues that suggest something subtle, something concealed, something that by peering at these washes of colors begins to reveal the unconscious heart of the painter. Our ancestors had a saying "fill a space with the color of the heart."
