Xu Qin: I thought it was inevitable to gain something with age, but in fact it is far more likely to see that something is lost. Over the past few years, my painting has concerned this theme, exploring a sense of isolation and self-experience that we encounter as we age. This isolation is at the center of my painting language. To achieve this sense of isolation, I combine Western minimalism with the spirit of South Song Dynasty ink painting. I go deeper and deeper into the rawness of this scenery until I find what I have aimed to achieve.
