If we appreciate his works under the discourse of classical painting, we see his subtle nods to and reverence for the

ancient masters: Ni Zan's elegant characters and Dong Qichang's literati paintings for example. This is another of Xu's ways to reflect on classical painting and its role as well as the current fervor for Chinese painting in today's heated art market. The contrasts in his work inspire us to reflect deeply on the role of the young landscape painter in our high-pace modern financially focused society. He does his work with a sense of calm and the deep speculative spirit of an ancient Chinese philosopher. ( Wang Yunchong)
