Yang Yu's fine inkbrush court ladies are exquisite in their image-design. The line drawing seems done with wisps of floating silk, and restrained use of fine-hatch shading lends richness to her character studies. The rhythmic sinuosity of her lines, with their endless variations, evoke an elevated temperament. The traditional five grades of ink intensity find their consummate application here. Although the picture plane is in black and white, there is an amazing chromatic richness. Her female figures are not gentle and restrained like the elegant court ladies of traditional fine inkbrush painting, nor are they like the realistically drawn modish females
favored by current fine inkbrush art. Rather, they are marmoreal, dreamy modern femmes in a symbolically fraught ambience. Yang Yu takes Chinese tradition as her foundation stone. She absorbs and fuses all kinds of graphic perceptions to portray life’s evanescencewith its joys and sorrows to form her highly identifiable personal style of fine inkbrush human figures.
