Cai Longfei: I often have a hard time giving a satisfactory explanation of my work. Having lived overseas for many years, I often sink into a kind of personal identity anxiety. This drifting experience is perhaps unconsciously ingrained in the work I do. To me, abandoned items of everyday life in the wilderness constitute an embarrassing and absurd scene. Garbage (filth) and a balloon (beauty) are juxtaposed in the same image, expressing a profound, unspeakable feeling. The fragility of the balloon and the heavy weight borne by a chair are metaphors for the anxiety and insecurity of real life, a shared dilemma that all of us must face.
