Chen Jiaye's paintings reveal to us the culturally prosperous period of the Song and Yuan dynasties, a time when the literat i in high spirits, competed to drink wine and compose poems. The sense of distance and tranquilit y, a characteristic of traditional Chinese painting, is not the only thing viewers can perceive in Chen 's works. Most material in his paintings has been ignited, folded, and flat tened, or hidden behind a torn canvas. As the modern Chinese literary master Lu Xun once said, "tragedy comes

from the ruin of beautiful things" – but Chen has no intention to destroy beauty. What he pursue s, instead, is the shaking off of western influence and the expression of time-honored oriental art. At the same time, he wants to unveil the wounds of traditional Chinese culture. This unspoken, potent feeling of loss is expressed throughout his work. (Zhu Xiaojun)
