Chen Jun: Using Chinese classical landscape and its philosophical spirit as background, this painting intimates the loss of our secluded soul habitat, long replaced by the city landscape of modern consumer society and industrial civilization. An absurd image created by contradictory consciousness and time dislocation, this space has vanquished the Chinese spirit with its lit up city landscape, so noisy and disruptive that one can no longer hear or see the harmonious spiritual home of man and nature. The city landscape shines on an ancient land with only outer form left. Behind its vanity lies nothingness, and the moment of its glory is attained at the cost of a greater destruction. The city is a scene of utopian nothingness that cannot compensate its lack of real value, throwing people into anxiety and loss of reality.
