Dong Yayuan: I tend not to identify with the theory that deems physical matter as the sole source of everything, nor do Iidentify with the one that posits reality as fundamentally mental. Both seem too extreme to me. I ra ther believe that out of the physical world there exists an independent mentally constructed world. This worldview of mine is the inspiration for the "Mountains beyond Fans" series, in which I've tried to juxtapose opposites such as theism vs. atheism, pursuit of fame and wealth vs.seeking reclusion, the Orient vs. the Occident, construction vs. deconstruction, peace vs. discord, etc. The applicationof traditional block printing in this series, a technique that embodies traditional Chinese beaut y and wisdom, helps create the artistic conception that I intend to convey through my work. Such an approach alsoaccentuates the sense of unity and harmony in these juxtapositions, making both my work and myself complete.
