Fu Yu: My work in woodcarving forms a continuation of my previous puppet series. Each image comes from the memory of childhood. Of course, everyone has a memorable childhood, and so it is with me, but because of my own idiosyncratic and special experiences, mine was perhaps more unusual than most. The reason why I choose woodcarving as material is that I wanted to retain a feel of solid, real things in my hands. I did not add any color to the wood but retained its original look, so as to maintain a simple beauty. This aesthetic mirrors my childhood.
