Guan Weiwei: In my work, I am accustomed to constructing contradictions, paintings scenery in a manner that appears both realistic and surreal. The elephant is in the scenery of and lakes and hills, while also stranded in a tangible prison-like space.Boats pass by swif tly, but to what destination? Up on the high mound, the opinionated mouse has no idea that there is no hiding place beneath the mountain. The zebra will soon come across a rumbling tank on the hillside – how shall they meet one another? These contradictory images show up time and time again in my work. Behind them lie the rights of humanity and nature, which are both sacrificed for human possession of material and the haught y process of civiliz ation. If "survival of the fit test" is the general rule, then the destiny of natural life is in our hands. Will it be "placed in jeopardy" or have a "bright future"? I cannot answer this question, but I hope generosity and close attentiveness can help the world to survive.
