Liu Kai: My work stems from an interest in the mundane objects of the jungle world, those that look very small and weak.Despit e their low position in this environment, in their bodies I can always feel the dignity and power of life. I transpose on these animals my own attitudes and feelings, conveying my sentiment through their eyes, actions, and facial expressions. I work with the material of wood, because people feel warmth at the sight of rustic timber. Simultaneously, wood carving is a creative way of subtraction, and this creative approach also works without adding contrived fun. My work does not need to express itself in words, and I look forward to the audience feeling wa rmth and strength through a seemingly simple image.
