Zhang Hui: By focusing on my personal feelings about today 's society, I hope to express my own thoughts and realizations about contemporary civilization more generally. The attitudes of cartoon characters in my paintings represent my own in real life: eagernes s to love, anxiety, fantasy, joy, and so for th. Preoccupied with loneliness, self-think ing, or self-amusement, they seem sensitive, paranoid,or self - centered. Although we see them as personal feelings, the agony, anxiety, insecurit y, and disappeared sense of social duty we sometimes feel are ac tually universal issues among people today.
