Chen Jiaye: Most of the works I’ve done express my reflection as a Chinese citizen on my experience facing the process of urbanization. Gradually from the creation of my work, I’ve also realized simple that conflicts between Eastern and Western culture or between tradition and modernity are not what I’m most interested in. What draws my attention recently is finding the most suitable method of expression for the spiritual part of Chinese traditional culture in modern times, that is, to better convey this spiritual connotation through the language of painting. Chinese people often use a kind of metaphysical “landscape” to depict a kind of metaphysical contemplation, which I find to be the most interesting element in Chinese culture. Therefore I concentrate on the intrinsic logic of artistic creation, which clearly implies the process of change in each artist’s thinking and interests, or put in other words, the revelation of the artist as an individual.
