Chen Xuanrong: CALL ME MAYBE is the name of a catchy English-language song after which I named my work. I have now lived in Beijing for 6 years leaving my home in Fujian. My deepest impressions of Beijing come from the severe air pollution and the obscene advertisements for prostitution services that appear without invitation. I reinterpret famous nude and erotic paintings from art history in woodcut and add in the prostitutes’ phone numbers, followed by the words “CALL ME MAYBE”, to give the works a feeling of having been printed rather than made in woodcut. The original works with vintage gold frames are hung in the exhibition hall; while outside the hall, I print 100,000 shrunken copies of advertisements. They are distributed everywhere in the street, galleries, art museums and on the walls, first quietly blooming and then quietly wilting. As for my original works, I hope that they can climb over the corpses of the 100,000 printed advertisements, up to the altar of fine art.
