Li Ang: In all of China's long history of painting, I am most interested in the period before the 10th century, which was the period of the"boundary drawings". In my recent works, I try to choose the boundary drawings as my vehicle and entry point for connecting with traditional art from the period before the 10th century. In the centuries that have passed since, the boundary painting has lost the status it once held. Since the emergence of scholarly painting, boundary painting has been defined as an enemy and ignored. The differences in style between the boundary drawings and the literati paintings have also been explored before. However, I have some new and different views on these two styles, and will be developing them further in my upcoming work.
