Zhang Mengli: The male body was the first subject I focused on during the past three years, but it is not the only one. I try to record fleeting situations and the feelings they give rise to. Obvious elements to depict include deserts, light, twisting movements, looseness, cleanliness, happiness, archipelagoes, outlines, and men. On the contrary, there are elements more difficult to depict, such as atmosphere, emotion, imagination, signals sent and received, and even the laws of logic and physics. I'm willing to enter any of my works; if they are not relaxed and natural, but rather dirty and nervous, boring or too man-made, I'll throw them away. Abandoning restlessness and chaos is very important to me. It's like the way a piece of music can be more sensitive than a drawing or a painting in that no note should ever be jarring to the ear.
