Zhang Pengfei: What is the essence of painting? Does it need express something other than itself? Does it need to carry so many meanings? I first paint a nearly complete and perfect picture full of feeling and emotion. Then I cover it with other colors, gradually weakening it until it becomes nearly white. This cycle between white and black attempts to obscure the original picture to the point that it becomes indistinguishable or even unrecognizable. I try to stay away from overdone symbolism and details, so that the painting can be simpler and more direct, and the "symbols" on the painting can be more powerful. In this way, I return my focus to the painting itself and highlight what it is.
