Zhang Wei: "Folding" is an action not unlike for a second time layering and covering, wherein a flat surface can take abstract forms. I make folds elements of my paintings in order to express my experiences and understanding related to time, space, and people. This act itself only exists in a virtual way for me, but the process and results are concrete. Through folding the surface over and over, something is taken away, allowing something else to reveal itself. Some things become blurred, while others become clear. The surface takes a form neither flat nor three dimensional, something that I call "2.5 dimensional space", which is not a breakdown of the contradiction between flat and three-dimensional space, but rather an expression of my explorations in both form and though process.
