Zhao Na: I like to use sharp implements to draw my works, such as pencils, fountain pens and dip pens. Sharp objects often give rise to feelings of insightfulness, accuracy, and pain. When I work with them I can better convey my state and mood. I often use the word "streaming" to express the relationship in the creative process between the heart, brain, hand, pen, and canvas. This feeling of streaming is very illustrated, not unlike that when writing a diary or drawing sketch, showing my truest feelings the viewer, while at the same time serving as a record of my life. My work employs the theory of "using things as metaphors for people, and scenes as metaphors for concepts or events". I strive to deliver a visually elegant surface that lies above deep meanings hidden below. I place deformed objects in surreal spaces. Events and topics encountered in life are my sources my inspiration, I like this kind of stability in my creative process, where every time my brush is able to express what lies within my mind I am given a feeling of satisfaction that words cannot describe.
