Zhen Yalei: An artist should not necessarily aspire to become a "master". Rather, he should focus his attention having a dialogue with art history while at the same time retaining relevance in contemporary times. He must have a combination of respect for history and social responsibility awareness, because the artist's work is not only a physical creation, but also functions as an extension of his mental space. The formal language of sculpture is not limited to the materials employed, and the artists' thoughts should not be limited to the work itself. The work should serve as a vessel through which to convey its creator's thoughts. This is what is meant by "conceptual art". Though modern sculpture employs complex vocabulary and dazzling visual effects, the root of the work's creation lies nonetheless in insightful thinking. The work titled "The right to read will ultimately be lost" is a revelation of this concept. Through replacing damaged books with rotten wood, I examine the relationship between reading and observation.
