Huang Qitan: “Space” is a subject that I have always explored in my paintings. This subject has extraordinary breath and depth, which could inspire very diverse ways of expression in art-making. Not only does this so-called “space” include physical space and temporal space in my work, there is also elements of conceptual space, such as historical space and psychological space. The concept of space spans multiple scopes and is also a cultural language. To engage with the rich connotations of space in my art, I realized the need for diverse mediums, such as painting, print-making, collage or digital photography, all of which can become the medium of my artistic expression. Nevertheless, how to organically unite these mediums and artistic languages in my work is the current focus of my artistic experiments.
