Wang Guanglin: Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains. ( L’homme est né libre et partout il est dans les fers.) The monitoring system can be found everywhere: schools, hospitals, prisons even social sciences. People are facing huge difficulty making a living.Under the monitoring system, people just like in the “Panopticon”, Foucault called it “the city of prison”. In the “city”, each organization makes its own norm and discipline and control people’s behavior from the rational level. When people face the monitoring system in their daily life, they cannot feel the authority directly. But people will adjust their behavior according to the authority. This is a process of domestication.In my painting, I took the subjects away and left the public space and the freeze-frame time, then use ink painting to show a gray, dull public space. The space is eroded and controlled.
