Wu Nianqiu often uses both oil painting and installation in his works. He would arrange the actual space of the work and create on-site. The body, life and death are some of the topics he deals with and through which he explains a potential form of energy. With the concept of energy, his works seem to be taking a genuine perspective. He depicts an incident or a phenomenon, and then re-introduces the tranquil scene with a hint of melancholy. Yet these tranquil times come from the infinite extension of human desire, conspiracy and resistance. They are the irreversible consequence of overthrowing and destruction. The artist calmly brings out narrative works that bridge between personal ideas and viewers’ sentiments. With a clear and direct thread, viewers are lead to ponder on the unstable world behind the image and to associate with fragments of memory, lying in between personal and society consciousness. Ultimately, we trace back to the origin of this energy, and to the original force in human’s desire to survive. - Chu Hongrui (Principal of Estran, China-France Contemporary Art Communication Association)
