Zhang Lin: In my works, I try to combine materials with painting to construct additional dimensions beyond painting itself. In the space inside and outside of the painting, different silk thread intertwines different subjects to form a visually vague silk net, thus producing an illusion between the eye and the reality. This is my first attempt to combine materials and painting. Such a method separates the viewers from the artwork. When the viewers look through the gaps of the wool threads, they have to feel the artwork in a certain distance. The separation creates a new viewpoint for seeing because it directs the viewers’ attention from the painting technique to the construction of space and distance. The illusion of 2D painting and 3D space also strengthens the oil paintings’ tension and its power of expression.
