Zheng Ruoli: I don’t think my way of living is any special. I simply have a different perspective in observing this world. Photography is my way to act and express my observation of the world. As photography equipment become ever easily accessible and diverse, the way and the quantity of people creating photographs have drastically changed. We can take photographs anytime and anywhere with our phones, tablet PC and the micro single cameras, followed by digital editing and using an array of different software, and finally posting them online. I am thoroughly aware that there are already too many pretty, practical and utility photographs in our life, thus I need not contribute even more. I hope my works are about the everyday life and are “functionless”. They should be able to provide viewers with a unique visual experience to convey a personal sentiment. They are not there to show off or glorify anything. Therefore I pay attention to the everyday life and common objects. By expressing through “abnormal” vocabularies, I attempt to achieve “functionless” effects to react against utilitarianism and the mediocre.
