The engravings of Cai Yuanhe resonate with a sense of isolation and dislocation. In these works, the Guangzhou-based artist offers haunting images of figures who may be alone or in groups yet who, in either case, share not much more than their anonymity. In some of these works, humans are reduced to interchangeable body parts. In others, they aimlessly circle empty chair or form a macabre conga line whose destination appears to be nowhere, recalling the angst and alienation of German Expressionism.
