Li You: Before 2016, most of my works were straightforward recordings of objects and events from my surroundings, with the meanings and emotions in them also rather simple and direct. After 2016, my works became less explicitly direct and documentary in style, as I turned to more implicitly suggestive modes of expression. Nonetheless, the works continued to have a strong narrative aspect. Each of my works tells a part of a larger story, despite the fact that I have re-arranged these parts to create a different story from the one that took place in the real world. I hope that audiences are attracted to the continuity of the emotion and resonance with their own experience. Alienation between people is beautiful, poetic, romantic and metaphorical. I have come to focus on this alienation and include this theme prominently in my works.
