Congwen Lin：Having painted the Nine-Color Deer for a few years, the things I once hoped to figure out through painting have become more and more blurred. Painting can be cathartic at times, healing at others and torturing from time to time. I “talk” with my paintings, in the hope to re-understand myself and re-discover myself. Unexpectedly, the “I” I have found is so unfamiliar and unknown to me. It can be avaricious, brutal, bluffing and superficial. The people and the world possess hundreds of forms, while I stand unchanged. I intended to portray the hundred forms through the Nine-Color Deer, but all I portrayed is an unknown "I", imperceptibly influenced by the surrounding environment. My inner struggle and the outside environment penetrate each other through resistance, mutation and combat, generating an ultimately odd shape that appears in my paintings.
