Liu Wa: Art-making for me is a process of self-definition, an ongoing path, that will continue for years. Stimulated by the pop culture of taking selfies, I combine photography, painting, and objects to reflect on the shifting boundaries between an individual and the society. The commonplace elements, such as pixels, embroideries, and acupuncture needles, are suggestive of the overwhelming information and traditional cultures that surround me. My body is a battleground where external influences and social expectations are internalized in my disposition and translated into my behaviors. Simultaneously, I am also constantly redefining my own social role and reconstructing my identity just like everyone else.
