Tan Yingjie: Initially I have tried to show the relationship between hands and consciousness through chronic repetitive actions. Later I discovered the paper clay, a material being a perfect substitute for normal clay with wonderful texture. It allows me to feel the interaction between the soft material and the forces applied to it as I experiment. The process of shaping objects is a process of passive acceptance. In the process of shaping the paper clay, the artist’s body's strength is absorbed by the soft materials when it is released. However, the creation of work is not only the exploration of sculptural language and materials, but also of the creative motivations that directly affect the results of work. The ideas and associations that form at the conclusion of each experiment drive the next act of experimentation.
