Wang Maoyan: My current paintings mainly employ black, white, and gray to produce a contrast that cannot be easily expressed simply through strongly contrasting colors, providing people with more ease to accept my work. I have been the fan of cartoons since childhood. The late 20th century Japanese cartoons in particular have given me a great deal of inspiration and influence. Cartoons from this period often deal with topics related to human nature, life, our world and philosophical exploration of the universe. They employ realism and wit, touching the readers heart. Since I am a student of traditional Chinese painting, elements of traditional Chinese paintings, frescoes and Ukiyo-e inevitably also find their way into my work. Thus my canvases subconsciously will to some degree take on these characteristics, which in addition to sharp contrasts between black and white, make the works seem, calm, repressed and silent.
