Wang Peiqi: Originally, in order to learn what lies beneath the surface of beautiful paintings, the artist decided to gain a deeper understanding. Acrylic was chosen as the main material used in these works, and the artist proceeded to master these techniques. Because of the unsuitability of painting, the artist began to use techniques drawn from printmaking in the experimental process. Beginning as expressionist, becoming abstract and finally taking form as realist works, they describe normal, or perhaps beyond normal daily social life. Like the works themselves, what lies behind the pile of colors and pigments is anxiety. The viewers can only allow themselves to revel in the images found on the surface (satisfying a type of voyeurism), but are unable to realize where the true nature of the work lies. This is similar to how our lives are often bound by symbols and media, materializing into abstract ideals.
