Yangzi S. Zhang: My works mainly express my
conception of family and self identification, and my explorations into the
nature of interrelation. When creating a work of art, consciousness flows
freely from the artist into the work. A piece of work thus comes to have its own
independent consciousness, distinct from that of its creator. Synthesis is
created in the viewers’ consciousness when viewing the exhibition. According to
the theory of psychoanalysis, self-consciousness has three features: sociality,
figurativeness, initiative. These features make human cognition complex and the
forms they take are various. My works are not limited to a particular form or
material since I believe all the different characteristics of forms and
materials can bring unique senses to a work. By deconstructing and
reconstructing self-consciousness with various materials, I hope it can evoke
synthesis, forming a unified triangular relationship between the
artist, the viewer and the exhibition space.
