The series of works titled “The Dissociative Evil Spirits” apply methods of dissection and restructuring that are commonly used in contemporary art. But it is not difficult to observe the artist’s obsession and sublimation of traditional language. Traditional New Year paintings on planks of wood used to be practical folk consumer goods, but they were later approved by the imperial court and became works of art. Even now, the color value and modelling value of New Year paintings are regarded as an uncut and unprocessed jade, as well as a treasure of modeling for skilled artists. Ding Zhiwei used collages as a common method of breaking the visible image that has plots. He gave his works new features and methodically created an absurd visual experience for art fans. No plot remained and the God in the New Year painting descended to the world in his work. However, it makes the abstract pattern in his work gain more independent value.
