Gai Lihong

This set of works was inspired by a cactus which suffered from my lack of care and died a few years ago. I felt ashamed and tailored the “Eternal Cactus” to honor its memory. And afterward when I came across withered cacti I started to take pieces of them to make a quilted article –– further honoring the cactus I had killed.  This is another way of protecting tiny lives in the world.

Comment:

Gai Lihong quilted cloth materials and hand-made pleats together into these “Eternal Cactus”. Through her hands, the sharp thorns were transfigured into soft thread. She gave these simple but obstinate cactuses the chance to show their inner dreams and gentle. The reborn “Eternal Cactus” is full of love and vitality, carrying Lihong’s expectations and wishes to life. May we all can be brave and tough outside but have a soft heart, just as a cactus—this the best balance the world gifts to us.
