Because of his unique ideas on the inheritance of culture, Fang Qi has chosen ink, which has rich textological value in Chinese painting, for his creation. In his view, ink is not painting, but a concept system independent from painting, just as the aesthetic culture of traditional Chinese art is independent from the aesthetic system of Western art. Through his work with contemporary ink, he intends to correct the misconception of ink as it is used within contemporary Chinese painting, to free it from the perception of skill, and sublimate it as a kind of cultural idea embodying the values of national culture.
