The three lives are the past, the present and the future. Three peaceful lives means lives without disaster. For adults, such a theme creates complicated feelings. We experience happiness and peace, and also inevitably encounter difficulties and entanglements. In this series of works, I have used images from traditional allusions and colors from folk art. I tried to give these slightly rustic forms a clear sense of representation, and convey the complex feelings of my life at this stage. I often arrange the structure and color only according to my common sense of the composition. Subjects such as sacrifice, filial piety, official advancement, war, and farming have their own richness and ubiquity which naturally act within the picture, so as to evoke the viewer’s emotions; these themes belong to all people. The visual intensity of Qi Baishi's work comes not only from his ingenious painting skills, but also from the meaty complexity of humanity conveyed through a rustic material form. This is also my hope for this series of works.
