Graduating from the fine arts department at Hebei Normal University in 1989, Zhang has served as arts editor of the Book of Hebei Daily, director of the Beijing Song Ya Feng Art and Culture Center of Hebei Education Publishing House, and director of Information Research Center of China National Academy of Painting. Zhang is currently director at the Today Art Museum, editor-in-chief at Oriental Art and Art Today magazines, director at the Research and Promotion Center of Chinese National Academy of Art, President of Culture and Art Publishing House, and deputy minister of culture for the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
